The main tool in making Murano glass is the furnace which is a closed chamber, with walls made of refractory material and with openings from which the glass is extracted at a temperature of about 1000 degrees Celsius. Inside the furnace , there is a crucible which is a container, made of refractory material, for the mixed raw materials. The tools to work Murano glass are truly unique: the best-known tool is the blowpipe, a metal tube used to blow air into the molten mass as soon as it is taken from the furnace.
Every master glassmaker has his own personal tools. Wood or cast-iron moulds (whether open or closed), inspired by an ancient technique, are often used. Our company has a huge historical archive of moulds.
Over the centuries, the tools for glass blowing used in the furnace have remained the same, thus testifying to the craftsmanship and traditions that a Murano glass product embodies.
Glassmaking is based however on the skill of the craftsman rather than on the use of special tools.
An old proverb in Murano says:
“Good tools are useful, but good hands are better."
